Rule of St. Benedict “On the Observance of Lent”

Extracts from Chapter 49 (version: Abbot Parry OSB)

  • We urge the entire community during these days of Lent to keep its manner of life most pure…..{and} wash away in this holy season, the negligence of other times….{also} refusing to indulge evil habits and by devoting ourselves to prayer with tears, to reading, to compunction of heart and self-denial.
  • Thus he may reduce food and drink for his body, or his sleep, or his talkiveness or his looseness in speech, and so with the joy of spitiual desire, look forward to Holy Easter.”
  • “During these days, therefore, let us increase somewhat the usual burden of our service, as by private prayers and by diminution in food and drink.”

World Day of Prayer

  • Friday, 6 Mar : 2.15 pm World Day of Prayer Ecumenical Service at Easingwold Anglican Church. All are welcome to this service which is celebrated annually in over 130 countries. Hear the stories of the women of Nigeria.

  • Oratory of St Joseph : A new initiative at the request of Bishop Marcus Stock is a monthly group for young men (ages 21-35). The meetings will be on the last Thursday of the month at Hinsley Hall, Headingly, LS6 2 BX. There will be group prayer, guest speakers, social supper, and exposition of the Blessed Sacrament.
